Missing beginnings or quiet endings point toward a Voice Activity threshold. Rapid pulsing near fans can point toward suppression. Complete loss after moving a cable suggests a connection. A device vanishing from the input list suggests USB, driver, power, or interface trouble.
Test a normal sentence, a quiet sentence, and a held vowel. Note whether the system meter stops, Discord's indicator closes, or sound remains but distorts.
Compare two tests
Run Windows Start test or a simple Mac recording, then repeat in Discord Mic Test. If both cut out, inspect the physical path, hardware control, system level, or vendor software. If the system sample is continuous and Discord cuts out, focus on Discord sensitivity, processing, and selection.
This split prevents reinstalling Discord for a cable failure or changing gain for a Discord-only threshold.
Fix Voice Activity gating
Start with automatic sensitivity. If quiet syllables disappear, use a slightly more permissive manual threshold and retest. Moving the microphone closer often improves voice relative to room noise more effectively than raising gain.
Do not jump to an extreme threshold. If no setting captures speech without opening on noise, Push to Talk is the predictable branch.
Isolate processing
Temporarily disable noise suppression, echo cancellation, and automatic gain one option at a time. Keep only changes that make the repeated test more continuous and intelligible.
With headphones, echo cancellation may have little useful work. A delayed copy of your voice can come from a separate software-monitor path rather than Discord transmission.
Check connection and conflicts
Reconnect USB directly for diagnosis, reseat XLR or headset plugs, confirm wireless battery and intended profile, and close other audio applications temporarily. Test another known-good replaceable cable or port one at a time.
If the device disappears from the system list, use the platform detection guide. If the system meter remains stable, return to Discord.
Use the correct final branch
Confirm Discord's named input, permission, mute state, and current app version. Restart after permission changes.
For Discord on macOS with an XLR mic through a USB audio interface, use Discord's interface article only when another Mac recording works but Discord fails. That limitation is specific to the Discord macOS voice path.
Dropouts that appear only after several minutes deserve a longer controlled test. Keep the microphone still, close unnecessary audio utilities, and record locally while Discord runs. If the local recording remains continuous across the same timestamp, the cable and capsule are less likely than Discord configuration or its current voice session.
Once the fault disappears, restore convenience features one at a time. Re-enable suppression, automatic gain, or a virtual mixer separately and repeat the same phrase for at least a minute. The first returning dropout identifies the responsible feature far more reliably than changing several controls and accepting a temporary improvement.
Network trouble can interrupt what other people hear without interrupting the local Mic Test. If Mic Test and a simultaneous local recording stay continuous while a live call breaks up, check Discord connection status and general network stability. Keep that result separate from a microphone gate that also appears in the local test.
