SteelSeries Alias vs Alias Pro: USB mic or XLR mixer kit?

Choose Alias for one direct Windows USB microphone path. Choose Alias Pro only as the documented kit: its XLR microphone connects to the included powered Stream Mixer, and the mixer connects to one or two Windows PCs. The Pro microphone is not a direct USB device, and this comparison makes no sound or value winner.

Compared by documented connections, controls and parts. No hands-on sound ranking.

Choose one direct USB device

SteelSeries Alias

Alias connects straight to a Windows PC with the included USB-C-to-USB-A cable. Mute, gain, headphone output, and headphone level are on the microphone, with GG and Sonar available for supported Windows routing and effects.

Choose the complete XLR mixer kit

SteelSeries Alias Pro with Stream Mixer

Alias Pro requires its included XLR cable, powered Stream Mixer, and USB host connection. The mixer owns mute and headphone monitoring and provides the documented second-computer path. Full routing, dual-PC Streamer mode, and line output require GG and Sonar.

Alias Pro is an XLR-to-mixer system

Regular Alias connects from the microphone's USB-C port to a Windows PC USB-A port with the included cable. The microphone is the computer input and carries its own headphone output and front controls.

Alias Pro connects microphone XLR output to the included Stream Mixer XLR input. The mixer requires its included power adapter and connects to the PC by USB. Select the mixer endpoints in Windows and Discord. A passive XLR-to-USB cable cannot replace the mixer, and the microphone itself has no direct USB host path in the reviewed manual.

Controls move from microphone to mixer

Regular Alias has a microphone mute control, on-device gain, and a 3.5 mm headphone output with its own level dial. That makes mute and monitoring local to the direct USB microphone path. SteelSeries GG and Sonar add supported Windows routing and effects but are not listed as required for the basic physical connection.

Alias Pro places the microphone mute button and 3.5 mm headphone output on the included Stream Mixer. Its programmable volume dial defaults to headphone level. The manual documents a basic PC1 input and output path without Sonar, while full routing, dual-PC Streamer mode, and line-output operation require GG and Sonar. Keep Discord's selected input aligned with the intended Sonar or hardware endpoint.

The second Pro USB port serves a defined dual-PC plan

Alias Pro's Stream Mixer provides two USB-C computer ports, and the standard kit lists two USB-C-to-USB-A cables. A one-PC setup uses PC1. A two-PC setup adds PC2 through the second port and uses GG and Sonar Streamer mode for the documented full workflow.

Two ports do not remove routing choices. Record which computer runs Discord, which runs the game or capture workload, where headphones connect, and which Sonar mix reaches each destination. If you do not need a second computer or mixer-level routing, the added Pro path solves no stated requirement.

  1. Draw microphone, XLR cable, mixer, power, PC1, and optional PC2.
  2. Name the Windows and Discord input endpoint for each computer.
  3. Test mixer mute and headphone monitoring before enabling Sonar routing.
  4. Enable Streamer mode only for the documented dual-PC workflow, then repeat the Discord test.

Both boxes include mounting parts, but Pro adds a powered desktop device

Regular Alias includes the microphone, desktop stand, shock mount, boom-arm adapter for 3/8-inch and 5/8-inch threads, USB-C-to-USB-A cable, and guide. The direct Windows path needs no separate interface.

Alias Pro includes the XLR microphone, Stream Mixer, stand, shock mount, boom-arm adapter, two USB-C-to-USB-A cables, XLR cable, power adapter and regional clips, and guide. Reserve desk space and a power outlet for the mixer as well as a position for the microphone. The reviewed evidence does not establish use with an alternate interface because the microphone's standalone phantom-power requirement remains unknown.

The documented path is Windows only

The exact manuals list Windows PC compatibility for both models. macOS, PS5, Xbox, and Nintendo chat paths remain unknown, so the USB connector on Alias and the USB ports on the Pro mixer do not establish those hosts.

Both are documented as condenser microphones with cardioid pickup, but GamingMics has not tested either unit. The larger Pro system, XLR connection, capsule descriptions, and software options do not prove better voice quality, room rejection, or value.
