Draw the two paths
USB mode is microphone to its internal preamp and converter to the host. XLR mode is microphone analog output to an external interface or mixer, then that device's converter to the host. Write the path before comparing results.
Using both connectors is not automatically supported for every purpose. Some models document simultaneous outputs or specific limitations; follow the exact manual.
What USB mode can provide
USB mode can expose a named computer input, onboard digital processing, firmware, companion-app controls, a headphone amplifier, and direct-monitor mix when the model includes them. The microphone itself owns conversion and usually the first gain stage.
The Shure MV7+ and RØDE PodMic USB document digital functions tied to their USB paths. Feature names and host support differ, so do not generalize one hybrid's app or processing to another.
What XLR mode changes
In XLR mode, the external interface or mixer owns preamp gain, analog-to-digital conversion, phantom-power delivery when required, computer drivers, and headphone monitoring. The computer usually sees the interface name.
USB software controls may not affect the XLR signal. An analog dynamic microphone may not need phantom power; other microphones may. Use the model and interface manuals rather than a category shortcut.
Follow the headphone jack
If headphones plug into the microphone, their monitoring features generally belong to its USB electronics and power state. If headphones plug into the interface, the interface owns the direct monitor and playback blend.
An immediate monitor proves only the local headphone route. Test the selected app input separately to prove transmission.
Compare modes fairly
Keep mouth distance, angle, room, phrase, and output loudness as consistent as possible. Match level without clipping, then make short recordings through each complete path. A louder recording can seem better even when it is simply louder.
Record the interface, gain, processing, and monitoring state with the result. Avoid declaring one connector universally superior from one unmatched comparison.
Choose by path needs
Choose USB when you want a compact single-device setup and the microphone's documented digital features. Choose XLR when you need a particular interface, multiple inputs, hardware mixing, or an upgradeable analog chain. Hybrid ownership can preserve both options.
If USB works and XLR does not, inspect the interface, cable, channel, and gain. If XLR works and USB does not, inspect the USB cable, host support, permission, and selected device. Discord's macOS XLR-interface issue is specific to that app and platform, not a general hybrid-mode rule.
Avoid connecting USB and XLR simultaneously unless the manufacturer documents that workflow. Even when both outputs operate, they may have different levels, latency, processing, or ground behavior. The manual should define whether simultaneous use is supported and which controls affect each output.
A purchasing comparison should price the full path. USB may need only a cable and headphones; XLR may add an interface, suitable cable, desk monitoring, and possibly a preamp with enough clean gain. Conversely, an existing interface can make the XLR path simpler. Compare owned equipment and required functions, not connector prestige.
Keep firmware and app dependencies in the USB column. A useful onboard setting may persist after configuration, or it may require software running; the manual should say. XLR remains dependent on the interface and its host support. Neither path is independent of every driver, power, or operating-system constraint.
