Inventory every part
List the microphone, yoke or shock mount, included thread adapter, arm, clamp or grommet base, cable, and any pop filter. Record the microphone assembly's actual weight, not only the bare microphone.
Common microphone mounting threads include 5/8-27 and 3/8-16, but product regions and included adapters vary. Verify both ends in the manuals. Never force a thread that starts crooked or binds.
Resolve the thread chain
The arm's top stud must match the microphone yoke or shock mount, either directly or through a rated adapter. An adapter changes thread size, not the load capacity or balance of the arm.
Thread pitch matters as well as diameter. A camera-style 1/4-inch mount is not interchangeable merely because an adapter looks close. Start by hand for several turns and stop if resistance appears immediately.
Check the complete load range
Compare the arm maker's supported weight range with the combined microphone, mount, adapter, and attached accessories. Arms often rely on spring tension; a microphone below or above the useful range may rise, sag, or drift.
A stated maximum is not a promise of perfect positioning at full extension. Heavier assemblies create more leverage when extended horizontally. Follow the arm's tension-adjustment instructions and test over the intended reach.
Inspect the desk before clamping
Measure desktop thickness at the exact clamp location, including bevels, aprons, cable trays, drawers, and metal frames. Compare it with the clamp opening and required flat contact area. Hollow or fragile tops may need reinforcement approved for the desk.
Confirm space below for the screw and above for the base. A grommet mount requires a suitable existing hole or an authorized desk modification; drilling is a separate irreversible decision.
Plan the movement envelope
Map where the arm parks, crosses monitors, reaches your mouth, and clears keyboard and mouse movement. Include connector and cable bend radius. A rear clamp saves foreground space but may demand greater reach and load the arm more.
Choose a side that keeps the microphone close without blocking the screen. The mic-position planner can help estimate mouth distance; verify the real arm dimensions before purchase.
Run a safe fit test
Install the clamp according to its manual, protect the desk surface where appropriate, keep the assembly supported while tightening, and route the cable with enough slack for every joint. Tighten only to the manufacturer's guidance.
Success means the base stays flat, the arm holds at near and far positions, joints move without cable pull, and the mic can reach its intended angle. Sag indicates load or tension mismatch; desk flex indicates the mounting surface needs a different solution; a binding thread means stop and verify the adapter.
Cable weight can change balance, especially with thick XLR cables or a connector that exits toward an arm joint. Route it loosely along the arm and leave a small service loop at the microphone. Tight cable ties can transfer movement noise, limit rotation, or pull a light microphone out of position.
Recheck clamp tightness and desk contact after the first few movement cycles, following the arm manual. Do not compensate for a slipping base by overtightening against particleboard, glass, or a hollow surface. A larger approved mounting plate, grommet solution, or freestanding base may be the correct desk-specific answer.
Measure twice when product pages list only a maximum desk thickness. A clamp also needs enough throat depth and a flat underside before an apron begins. Sketch a side view with those dimensions and the cable tray position; this catches more real fit failures than comparing the desktop thickness alone.
