Tone generator

A steady tone at any pitch. Use it to find a rattle in a speaker, a dead spot in a headset or the top of your hearing.

440Hz

Start quiet. High tones at high volume can hurt your hearing and annoy pets; square and sawtooth waves sound louder than sine at the same setting.

Ways gamers use it

  • Find a rattle: sweep slowly through 40 to 200 Hz with the slider. A buzz at one pitch is a loose part, a desk object or a cable touching the speaker.
  • Check a headset driver: play 1 kHz in both cups and compare. A cup that sounds quieter or fuzzy at several pitches is worth a warranty claim.
  • Your hearing range: raise the pitch from 10 kHz until it disappears. The top of your hearing drops with age, and many adults hear little above about 15 kHz; it says nothing about your headphones unless someone else hears higher on the same pair.
  • Mic feedback check: with a speaker near your mic, a tone shows whether the mic picks up desk sound. Then run the mic test and watch the level.
